To the Schachen mountain lodge

What was called only just rideable in former days, is not so hard to do nowadays, especially when using a full suspension bike. But still the cart trails, the gravel and the rock steps remain a challenge.

We start in Mittenwald and take the street in the direction of Leutasch . At the first sharp curve we leave the asphalt road and go straight on to the Lautersee and the Ferchensee.

After passing the Ferchensee we take the first branch to the left after a total of 6 km following the sign to Schachen / Bannholzer Weg , where we go straight on at the next branch. At about km 9,5 we reach a forest clearing where we manage the first gravel trail to the left for some hundred meters before we turn to the right. Here a first foretaste is waiting for us. A small rocky cart single trail leads us to a wide forest street after 1 km.

On this we fly down and brake our speed before we reach the forest path from Elmau to Schachen, where we have to turn left sharply to Schachen

After 2 km we reach the end of the well maintained forest road at  the fence of the Wettersteinalm. Now the real work starts. We turn to the right. On cart trails, mixed with gravel, wooden roots and rock plates we ride up the Königsweg (Kings way) to Jagdschloß Schachen.

A really magnificent landscape with Alpspitz and Zugspitz view waits for us on our way to Schachen . After the first look at our today's destination we enjoy a short downhill before fighting up the last kilometer to the castle and the Schachenhaus.

Don't miss a visit to the botanic alpine garden planted with over 1000 species of mountain plants from all over the word. The garden is open daily from the beginning of July umtil the middle of September. And also don't miss a visit the view point some meters behind the alpine garden  down to Oberreintal. A sightseeing tour of the lodge should also be on your cultural program for today.
